The Drakensberg Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls 2-day hike covers about 14km both ways counting from Sentinel Carpark up to Tugela Falls and back to Sentinel Carpark with a ascend of about 500m from 2500m – just under 3000m. On average this hike will take about 4 hours per day. That includes stopping for incredible views. The next morning we will return to Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge where cars without a 4×4 capability are parked. From there we’ll depart to our various homes.

The route is mostly circular starting at the Sentinal car park and walking up the zigzags for a stop above the 3 Witches. After this, we stroll along the contour path to the world-famous chain ladders. A bit of a head for heights comes in handy here. After climbing the chain ladders we’ll be on top of the Amphitheatre for a gentle stroll to our campsite. The way back down has 2 options. We can either climb back down the ladders or down the gully.

In addition to the world-renowned Drakensberg Amphitheatre and the Tugela Falls which is 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝, we will also see the Devils Tooth, the 3 Witches, and Mont-Aux-Sources Peak which is the source of the Tugela River.

Mount-Aux-Sources is the source of the Tugela which flows into the Indian Ocean. It is also the source of water that ends up in the Orange River finishing in the Atlantic Ocean.

After settling in and pitching our tents at the top of the Tugela Fall, we’ll all have a wonderful supper in the fresh air of the Drakensberg while we watch the sunset and the Tugela Fall plummets down the Amphitheatre wall to almost 1000m.

The next morning, we’ll awake to a beautiful sunrise as we watch from within our sleeping bags without having to leave our tents. We’ll later enjoy one of the most beautiful sunrises in the world as we wander up to Beacon Buttress to catch more amazing views along the way. After this, we’ll walk down The Gully to join the contour path past the zigzags to Sentinel car park and head back to Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge where we hop in our cars and head back home. The Guided Drakensberg Amphitheatre and Tugela Fall 2-day hike should be on every person’s «MUST DO» hiking list.
