The Amatola Hiking Trail is considered one of South Africa’s top hikes. It is up there with theĀ Otter TrailĀ and theĀ Whale Trail in terms of difficulty and popularity. The trail is set in the Amatola Mountains involving days of wandering rich indigenous rainforests complete with yellowwood and redwood trees, rolling mountains, mountain fynbos, wildflowers, and water – in the form of streams, waterfalls, and pools – in abundance.

The average day’s hike is 16.5 km to 19 km, and your evenings are spent in wooden huts – most of which are set in amongst the surrounding forest, with hot water donkeys to heat showers, and toilets that range from a long drop to flush.

Weather in the mountains is variable throughout the year. All-weather clothing is essential as you can face anything from intense heat to freezing cold rain.

Day one: 11.9km, 763, Ascent
Maden Dam to Gwiligwili Hut (atop a hill with incredible views) is a steep climb through the indigenous Pirie forest, although there is a shortcut that can save you 5 km.

Day two: 19.14km, 633, Ascent
to Dontsa hut (set in a pine plantation), a somewhat easier day through an indigenous forest with the Keiskammahoek valley below you.

Day three: 20.62km, 1024, Ascent
to Cata Hut (modern with a gas-fired geyser) leaves the forest and climbs to the plateau. Walk in amongst wildflowers and macchia grasses, after which you can choose to climb Doornkop or enter the Hovald forest.

Day four: 14.56km, 634, Ascent
to Mnyameni hut (the most isolated hut) ā€“ the easiest and shortest day with an initial climb up Geju peak with incredible views, followed by a descent into Mnyameni gorge and Malan forest.

Day five: 19.42km, 991, Ascent
to Zingcuka hut ā€“ a tough day with a steep climb; optional swimming pools ease the walk, and dense forest shades the last few kilometers.

Day six: to Tyume River 16.2km, 855, Ascent
a day peppered by waterfalls in the forest with a long ascent up Hog 1 and then down to the Tyume River basin.

frequently asked questions

How to book the Amatola Trail?

You can book it directly through the Adventure Junkies Africa Event page.

The cost of the trail

The trek costs between ZAR 2500 and ZAR 2900 per person for six days/five nights. Cost includes pre and post hike accommodation (1 day before and 1 day after). And includes the shuttle from Hogsback to the start of the trail at Maden Dam.

Where to stay before and after the hike?

Hogsback is the nearest town to the trail so most people stay there before and after the hike.

The best time to hike the Amatola Trail

You can hike the trail all year round though in winter (June to August) days are shorter and temperatures are lower. Snowfalls can occur high in the mountains. Summer months (December to February) are known as rainy months; itā€™s warmer than in winter and days are longer but heavy rains can be a pain. December is as well a peak season due to the Christmas holidays so it can be crowded and youā€™ll probably have to book the trail beforehand.

What to pack for the hike?

Clothes Good hiking shoes Long hiking pants (the trail goes through the bush) A rain jacket A fleece 2-3 T-shirts Flip-flops Sleeping clothes 3 pairs of socks A cap/hat Sunglasses Swimming costume Underwear If you hike in winter youā€™ll need more warm clothes. Gear A sleeping bag. Depending on when you hike we did it in summer and had light summer sleeping bags. Cooking pots A stove and gas Plastic cups A lighter Plates (we ate from pots lids) Utensils A can opener (if you have any cans) A water bottle A towel Firelighters (to make fire if you plan to use fire places) First aid kit Toilet paper A torch Sunscreen Mosquito repellent (we didnā€™t have many mosquitoes though) A sponge to wash dishes Soap Toothpaste and toothbrush A book or/and playing cards. Food Breakfast ā€“ oats with sugar and coffee with cookies; Lunch ā€“ biltong with crackers; Dinner ā€“ spaghetti or instant mashed potatoes with a can of tuna and a can of curry beans/vegetables.
