SUMMARY:The Whale Trail Hike 🌷 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐
 🍪𝟐𝟔 🌷
DESCRIPTION:Event Dates: 4th - 9th September 2026\nStart: Potberg\, De Ho
op Nature ReserveFinish: Koppie Alleen\, De Hoop Nature ReserveDuration:
54 km\, 5 daysFitness: moderate to difficult (this is a relatively easy wa
lk\; you will need the endurance to complete 5 days)Our tip: Plan and book
early! The Whale Trail is one of South Africa’s most sought-after hikes\,
especially during whale season (July to December). Please note that this p
eriod falls within peak season\, and rates are reviewed and adjusted accord
ingly each year. Where to stay: De Hoop Accommodation\nDe Hoop is one of
the most beautiful spaces on the coast from which to watch whales. It is al
so one of the least frequented\, when compared to places like Hermanus\, d
uring the whale season.\nWhat makes it so enticing is the hundred or so wha
les that return to De Hoop bay annually.\nUp there with other highly popula
r hikes - like the Otter Trail - the Whale Trail is relatively young (a
round since only 2002). But the combination of awe-inspiring mountain and c
oastal walking for moderately fit hikers makes it achievable for a larger c
ross-section of society.\nYou overnight in cottages\; roughing it is not pa
rt of the deal.\nThe Whale Trail is an unforgettable experience\, taking yo
u through one of the Western Cape’s most unique and diverse nature reserv
es.\nThe route stretches over 55km\, from Potberg to Koppie Alleen\, with f
ive overnight stops (hikers spend the first night at Potberg before startin
g the trail). The unspoiled natural beauty on this trail is unsurpassable\,
leading through lush fynbos and offering stunning views of the coast.\nDe
Hoop is known as one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in the wor
ld. Between June and November\, the coastline is transformed as southern ri
ght whales migrate here to breed and look after their young.\nUnfortunately
\, children below the age of eight are not allowed on the trail. The route
is fairly strenuous\, varying in intensity.\nReservations are limited to gr
oup bookings of either 6 or 12. The tariff includes the shuttle service fro
m Koppie Alleen\, where the trail ends\, back to the Potberg tourism office
\, and the undercover Whale Trail parking area.\nExpect:✨ Ocean-view hiki

 𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬\nDAY ONE: POTBERG TO CUPIDOSKRAAL – 15 KM\nThe toughest
stretch of the hike\, ascend Potberg\, and climb to the highest point of th
e trail. Lunch at the second crossing of the Melkhout River.\nDAY TWO: CUPI
DOSKRAAL TO NOETSIE – 14.7 KM\nFollow the crest of the Potberg through mo
untain fynbos\, before descending to Noetsie bay.\nDAY THREE: NOETSIE TO HA
MERKOP – 7.8 KM\nThe easiest of the five days\, you only do about three h
ours of walking\, giving ample time to explore the coastline\, particularly
Stilgat. Whilst you have to negotiate a chain ladder to get there\, it is
well worth it for the snorkeling and swimming opportunities.\nDAY FOUR: HAM
ERKOP TO VAALKRANS – 10.5 KM\nThe day is mostly beach walking\, which can
feel strenuous. Vaalkrans lies on top of a cave.\nDAY FIVE: VAALKRANS TO K
OPPIE ALLEEN – 7 KM\nAgain a shorter day of hiking through coastal thicke
ts with plenty of time to drink in the scenery. Hippo Pools provides great
swimming.\nPeople have seen up to 50 whales at a time in the bay at Koppie
 Alleen.\n \n\n  5 Days / 5 Nights        Self-Guided Hike
  DIFFICULTY:  6/10\n \n\nAt a glance\n\nWhat sets the Whale Trail apart f
rom the rest\, though\, is that it offers the best land-based opportunities
to spot whales\n\n\n\nCheck in: Allow some time to settle-in and watch the
20-minute Whale Trail DVD at the Reception in Portberg next to the 1st mig
ht's accommodation. The Whale Trail DVD provides a brief outline of changes
recently made to the trail. \n\n\n\nStarting Point: Potberg  \nEnd Poin
