 he Whale Trail is one of South Africa’s most sought-after hikes\, especia
 lly during whale season (July to December). Please note that this period fa
 lls within peak season\, and rates are reviewed and adjusted accordingly ea
 ch year. Where to stay: De Hoop Accommodation\nDe Hoop is one of the most
  beautiful spaces on the coast from which to watch whales. It is also one o
 f the least frequented\, when compared to places like Hermanus\, during th
 e whale season.\nWhat makes it so enticing is the hundred or so whales that
  return to De Hoop bay annually.\nUp there with other highly popular hikes 
 - like the Otter Trail - the Whale Trail is relatively young (around si
 nce only 2002). But the combination of awe-inspiring mountain and coastal w
 alking for moderately fit hikers makes it achievable for a larger cross-sec
 tion of society.\nYou overnight in cottages\; roughing it is not part of th
 e deal.\nThe Whale Trail is an unforgettable experience\, taking you throug
 h one of the Western Cape’s most unique and diverse nature reserves.\nThe
  route stretches over 55km\, from Potberg to Koppie Alleen\, with five over
 night stops (hikers spend the first night at Potberg before starting the tr
 ail). The unspoiled natural beauty on this trail is unsurpassable\, leading
  through lush fynbos and offering stunning views of the coast.\nDe Hoop is 
 known as one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in the world. Betw
 een June and November\, the coastline is transformed as southern right whal
 es migrate here to breed and look after their young.\nUnfortunately\, child
 ren below the age of eight are not allowed on the trail. The route is fairl
 y strenuous\, varying in intensity.\nReservations are limited to group book
 ings of either 6 or 12. The tariff includes the shuttle service from Koppie
  Alleen\, where the trail ends\, back to the Potberg tourism office\, and t

 𝐢𝐥𝐬\nDAY ONE: POTBERG TO CUPIDOSKRAAL – 15 KM\nThe toughest stre
 tch of the hike\, ascend Potberg\, and climb to the highest point of the tr
 ail. Lunch at the second crossing of the Melkhout River.\nDAY TWO: CUPIDOSK
 RAAL TO NOETSIE – 14.7 KM\nFollow the crest of the Potberg through mounta
 in fynbos\, before descending to Noetsie bay.\nDAY THREE: NOETSIE TO HAMERK
 OP – 7.8 KM\nThe easiest of the five days\, you only do about three hours
  of walking\, giving ample time to explore the coastline\, particularly Sti
 lgat. Whilst you have to negotiate a chain ladder to get there\, it is well
  worth it for the snorkeling and swimming opportunities.\nDAY FOUR: HAMERKO
 P TO VAALKRANS – 10.5 KM\nThe day is mostly beach walking\, which can fee
 l strenuous. Vaalkrans lies on top of a cave.\nDAY FIVE: VAALKRANS TO KOPPI
 E ALLEEN – 7 KM\nAgain a shorter day of hiking through coastal thickets w
 ith plenty of time to drink in the scenery. Hippo Pools provides great swim
 ming.\nPeople have seen up to 50 whales at a time in the bay at Koppie Alle
